Rivalry? Absolutely. Competition makes athletes better. It pushes them to work harder, stay hungry, and rise to the moment.
Jealousy? There is no place for it.
Youth sports should never become about adults tearing down another child because they wear a different uniform, play for another organization, or are finding success somewhere else. Every young athlete deserves to be encouraged, celebrated, and treated with respect, whether they are on our team or competing against us.
Our kids are watching us. They notice how we talk about other players, other coaches, and other teams. When adults model sportsmanship, confidence, respect, and genuine support for others, young athletes learn to do the same.
We can love our team fiercely. We can want to win. We can embrace rivalry and competition. But we can also clap for another child’s great play, recognize hard work, and remember that every child on that field is learning what it means to compete, lead, and become a good human.
Once the adults check themselves, the focus can go back where it belongs: developing the next generation of athletes, teammates, leaders, and good people. Post this on your fridge. We all need the reminder. Now let's go play some ball!
